Average Audiobook Length Calculator

Enter your word count to get the finished audiobook length at ACX's 9,300 words per hour or your own pace, work out how many words fit in a given number of hours, and add a per-finished-hour rate you were quoted for a cost estimate.

There is no official average audiobook length to quote, so this Audiobook Length Calculator estimates the finished length of your own book from its word count. It can also convert finished hours back into a word count. The default pace is the ACX figure of 9,300 words per hour, and you can enter your own pace in words per minute. For 80,000 words, the default pace gives 8 h 36 min. If you type a per-finished-hour rate, the tool also estimates production cost. It runs in your browser, is free, and needs no sign-up. Nothing you enter is uploaded. Results are calculated from the numbers you enter and the rates named on the page.

How to use the Audiobook Length Calculator

  1. Choose your direction: word count to finished hours, or finished hours to words.
  2. For words to hours, type your word count. To check a common length, use the 50,000, 80,000 or 100,000 words preset.
  3. Leave “Narration pace” on “ACX figure: 9,300 words per finished hour”. To use your own speed, choose “My own pace (words per minute)” and type it in “Narration pace (words per minute)”. Values outside 60 to 300 trigger a warning.
  4. Read the finished length. For example, 80,000 words at the default pace gives 8 h 36 min.
  5. For hours to words, enter “Finished audio length (hours)” or use the “10 finished hours” preset. At the default pace, 10 finished hours gives 93,000 words.
  6. To estimate production cost, type your per-finished-hour (PFH) rate in “Your quoted rate per finished hour, USD (optional)”. The page supplies no rate, so no cost shows until you enter one. For example, 8.602 hours at a typed $100 gives $860.22.
  7. Check “Narrator and editing work (ACX estimate)”. The page multiplies finished hours by 6.2, so 8 finished hours gives about 49.6 hours of work.
  8. Read any warning. Word counts under 1,000 and custom pace results trigger notes, and the custom pace note reminds you that results cover spoken text only.

A fees note appears whenever ACX figures are shown on the page, because the 9,300 words per hour pace and the 6.2 hours of work figure come from ACX Help.

What does the 9,300 words per hour pace mean?

ACX Help says most performers narrate about 9,300 words per hour, and dividing the word count by that figure gives the approximate finished length. That pace equals 155 words per minute. The formula is finished hours = word count ÷ 9,300. For example, 80,000 ÷ 9,300 = 8.602 hours, or 8 h 36 min. For 50,000 words the result is 5 h 23 min, and for 100,000 words it is 10 h 45 min.

The reverse step uses the same figure. 10 finished hours × 9,300 = 93,000 words.

How do I use a custom pace?

A custom pace works in words per minute. The tool multiplies your words per minute by 60 to get words per finished hour. At 150 words per minute, that is 9,000 words per hour, so 90,000 words takes 10 h 0 min. Custom pace must sit between 60 and 300 words per minute. The result covers spoken text only.

Why is the finished length only an estimate?

The finished length is an estimate. Real narration speed, pauses and the narrator’s pace all change the final running time, so the calculated figure is a starting point. Because no official average audiobook length was found, the tool does not show one. The only length it shows is the one that comes from the word count you enter.

How is audiobook production cost worked out?

Production cost equals finished hours multiplied by a per-finished-hour (PFH) rate that you type. The page supplies no rate, so no cost appears until you enter one. The rate you type is your own input, not a suggested price.

ACX Help estimates about 2 hours of recording, 3 hours of editing and 1.2 hours of quality check per finished hour. That totals 6.2 hours of work per finished hour, and new narrators are estimated at 5 to 7 hours. Eight finished hours therefore means about 49.6 hours of work. ACX describes three ways to pay for narration: Pay-for-Production, a one-time fee of finished hours multiplied by the rate agreed at the start; Royalty Share, with no upfront payment and a split of royalties for 7 years; and Royalty Share Plus, a reduced per-finished-hour payment plus the split.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average audiobook length?

No official average figure was found, so this tool does not show one. Enter your own word count to get the finished length of your book.

How long is 80,000 words as an audiobook?

At the ACX pace of 9,300 words per hour, 80,000 words is 8.602 hours, or 8 h 36 min. The result is an estimate that real narration can change.

Can I use a pace other than 9,300 words per hour?

Yes. Enter a custom pace in words per minute. Values between 60 and 300 words per minute are accepted, and anything outside that range triggers a warning.

How do I turn finished hours into a word count?

Multiply the hours by 9,300 at the default pace. For example, 10 finished hours gives 93,000 words. The 10 finished hours preset does this for you.

Does the tool tell me what to charge for my audiobook?

No. The tool multiplies finished hours by a per-finished-hour rate that you type, and it shows no cost until you enter one. Any rate you enter is your own input.

Why does the tool show a warning?

Warnings appear when a custom pace falls outside 60 to 300 words per minute, when the custom pace result is spoken text only, and when a word count is under 1,000.
