The Backstory Generator creates short character backstories for a fantasy, modern day, or science fiction setting. Pick a setting, a character role, and how many backstories you want, and the page builds a list you can read, copy, or print. Each backstory has two parts: where the character grew up and what happened to them, followed by a line with a secret, a flaw, a goal, and a reason the goal matters. The tool runs in your browser for free, with no sign-up. Each result is written with “they”, so it fits any character. Use the results as a starting point for a novel, a roleplaying character, or a game.

How to use the Backstory Generator

  1. Choose a Setting: Fantasy, Modern day, or Science fiction.
  2. Choose a Character role: Hero or main character, Villain, or Sidekick or ally. The role changes the last line of each backstory, not the first part.
  3. Choose How many backstories: 3, 5, or 10. Fewer gives you a quick look; ten gives you more details to mix and borrow from.
  4. Read the list. It refreshes as soon as you change an option, so you can try different settings and roles without pressing anything else.
  5. Click Generate more to get a new list with the same settings. Each backstory has a short first part (where the character grew up and what happened) and a second part with the secret, the flaw, the goal and the role line.
  6. Click Copy beside a backstory to copy it, or click the star beside it to add it to My shortlist.

Copy all copies the full list, and Copy shortlist copies your starred backstories. Copy link copies a page address that reproduces the same list for someone else, and Print / save as PDF prints the list. The shortlist is kept only until you close the page, so copy anything you want to keep before you leave.

How do I write a character backstory?

A character backstory explains how someone became who they are at the start of your story or game. Build it from a few connected parts rather than one long essay: where they came from, one event that changed them, and what they want now.

Start with the origin, then add the defining event that shaped or broke their life. Next, give them a secret they keep and a flaw that gets in their way. Finish with a goal and the reason it matters to them. Keep each part to a sentence or two so that someone reading it, or a game master, can see the character at a glance.

The sample fantasy hero result shows this structure. A family of traveling tinkers, a village burned in one night, a pact they cannot read in full, and a habit of hiding fear behind a joke all sit side by side, and the goal and reason explain what the character will do next.

What should a character backstory include?

A useful backstory covers six parts: an origin, a defining event, a secret, a flaw, a goal, and a reason the goal matters. Each generated result includes all six, so you can check any backstory against this list.

  • Origin: where the character grew up and what daily life looked like.
  • Defining event: the moment that changed their path.
  • Secret: something they hide from others.
  • Flaw: a habit or weakness that causes problems.
  • Goal: what they want to achieve now.
  • Reason it matters: why the goal is personal to them.

The last line changes with the role. Heroes get “Why it matters”, villains get “Where it turns” (for example, “they decide that the end excuses any means”), and sidekicks get “Why they stay”. The tool does not write names, relationships, or a full life story, so add those yourself to fit your world.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a character backstory be?

There is no fixed rule. A few sentences are often enough for a game table, where the rest is learned during play. A novel or long roleplaying campaign usually needs more detail, which you can add around the six core parts.

Can I use these backstories for my DnD or RPG character?

Yes. The backstories are starting points, so change details such as places, events, and motives to suit your table and your game master. Each result is written in a neutral way, so it works with any character type.

Can I use the generated backstories in a book or something I sell?

Yes. Generated results can be used anywhere, including in books, games, and products you sell, and no credit is needed. Some generated names can match a real person, place, or existing work by chance, so search any name before you use it commercially.

Does the Backstory Generator write character names?

No. The tool covers origin, defining event, secret, flaw, goal, and reason the goal matters. It does not write names, relationships, or a full life story, so you will need to add those yourself or use a name tool.

Why do I get different backstories each time I open the page?

Each visit starts with a new random list. The same settings and seed give the same list, so Copy link keeps or shares the exact list you saw. Click Generate more to get different results with the same settings.

Will the backstories fit the setting I choose?

Yes. The parts come from lists written for each setting. Fantasy results do not mention space stations, and science fiction results do not mention swords or kingdoms.
