Elf Name Generator
Choose a kind of elf to get a list of original elf names with optional family names and titles, ready to copy.
The Elf Name Generator creates elf names for characters in novels, tabletop games and other creative work. Choose one of seven kinds of elf, such as High elf, Wood elf or Dark elf, and the tool builds a list of given names, with optional family names and titles to match. You can limit the list to masculine or feminine names and choose how many names you see.
It runs free in your browser. There is no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded. The list updates as soon as you change an option, so you can try different kinds of elf until one fits your character. Every list has no duplicate names, so each line is a fresh choice.

How to use the Elf Name Generator
- Open Kind of elf and choose a type: High elf, Wood elf, Sea elf, Dark elf, Snow elf, Sun elf or Moon elf.
- Under Names for, pick Any, Masculine names or Feminine names.
- Under How many names, choose 5, 10 or 20.
- Leave Add a family name ticked to include a family name, or untick it to get given names only.
- Tick Add a title if you want a short title such as ’the Swift’ added to each name. It is off by default.
- Read the list. It refreshes each time you change an option.
- Click Generate more to get a new list with the same settings. Try the same kind of elf a few times: every click makes a new list, and each one stays free of duplicates.
Beside each name, Copy copies that name. Copy all copies the whole list. Click the star beside a name to add it to My shortlist under the results. The shortlist stays only until you close the page, and Copy shortlist copies it. Copy link gives you a page address that brings back the same list, and Print / save as PDF prints the list or saves it as a PDF.
How do I name an elf character?
To name an elf character, first decide which kind of elf they are, then pick a given name, a family name and an optional title that suit that kind. The kind matters most, because the sound of each part comes from it. A given name is built from a start, an optional middle and an ending that belong to that kind of elf.
Given names are 4 to 12 letters long. The generator never repeats a letter three times in a row and never puts three vowels in a row, which keeps names easy to say. Masculine and feminine names use different endings, so use the gender filter if your character needs one. Family names join two words, such as Silver and song, which gives a name that sounds like a family line. Titles such as ’the Swift’ or ‘Bowmaster’ add a role or a reputation.
What do elf names sound like?
Elf names sound different depending on the kind of elf. High elf names are long and formal, with endings such as -dor, -ion, -wen and -iel. Their family names use words like Star, Silver, Gold, Dawn and Crown, joined to song, light, crest or wind.
Wood elf family names draw on nature, using Leaf, Moss, Fern, Willow and Thorn with whisper, step, bough or walker. Sea elf names flow, with Wave, Pearl, Tide, Salt and Shell joined to song, crest or caller. Dark elf names are harder and sharper. They start with sounds such as Dra-, Mal-, Vel-, Zyl- or Nyx-, and their family names use Night, Shadow, Gloom, Ash or Black with veil, blade or weaver.
Snow elf family names use Frost, Snow, Ice, Winter and White. Sun elf names use Sun, Amber, Gold, Ember, Day and Gleam. Moon elf names use Moon, Silver, Star, Night, Mist, Pale and Dew.
What is the difference between a high elf, wood elf and dark elf name?
A high elf name sounds formal and polished, a wood elf name sounds rooted in nature, and a dark elf name sounds sharp and difficult to say. The difference shows in both the given name and the family name. High elf examples include ‘Finanael Skywind’ and ‘Aerenwen Goldbloom’. Wood elf examples include ‘Oakian Fernwalker’ and ‘Briwyen Brookroot’.
Dark elf names often carry a title. An example is ‘Vhalek Blackweaver Nightblade’, where the family name and the title both use dark words. Titles come from short lists, so some titles repeat across lists.
Can I use these elf names in my book or game?
Yes. Generated names can be used anywhere, including in books, games and products you sell, and no credit is needed. The lists are original to this tool, written as syllable and word lists rather than copied from a published name table.
Some names may match a real person, place or existing work by chance, so search for a name before you use it commercially. The US Copyright Office’s Circular 33 says that names of individuals, pseudonyms and titles are not protected by copyright, but they may be protected under trademark law in some cases.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Elf Name Generator free to use?
Yes. It is a free tool that runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need to sign up.
Do I need an account to keep my favourite names?
No account is needed. Use Copy or Copy all to save names to your own files, or Copy link to keep the list. The shortlist stays only until you close the page.
Will I get the same names if I use the same settings?
Yes, if the seed is the same too. The same settings and seed give the same list, which is what the shareable link relies on. Each visit to the page starts with a new seed. Click Generate more if you want a new list with the same settings.
Can a list contain the same name twice?
No. Every list has no duplicate names, ignoring capitals. A title can repeat across names, though, because the title list is short.
How is this different from the DnD Name Generator?
The DnD Name Generator has a single Elf race option. This page offers seven kinds of elf, along with family names and titles.
Are the names suitable for every fantasy setting?
They are generated from word lists for seven kinds of elf, so they suit many fantasy settings. You can adjust the kind, gender and options to fit your world.
