KDP Print Cost Calculator

Enter the Amazon store, interior, trim size and page count to see the printing cost per copy, the minimum list price KDP allows and the royalty at your price.

The KDP print cost calculator estimates how much Amazon KDP charges to print one copy of your book. You enter the binding, Amazon store, ink and paper, trim size and page count, and the tool shows the printing cost, the minimum list price and your royalty per copy. It is a free, browser-based tool, so you can start without signing up. Results are calculated from the numbers you enter and the rates named on this page, which were read from KDP’s published help pages. The same numbers help with a KDP pricing calculator check or a book printing cost calculator comparison between paperback and hardcover. Change one input at a time to see how page count or trim size moves the result before you decide on a format. Your entries stay in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use the KDP print cost calculator

  1. Under “Book type”, choose “Paperback” or “Hardcover”.
  2. Under “Amazon store”, choose the store. Paperback is offered for .com, .ca, .co.uk, the euro stores, .pl, .se, .com.au and .co.jp. Hardcover is offered for .com, .co.uk, the euro stores and .pl; other stores give an error.
  3. Under “Interior and paper”, choose black ink on white or cream paper, standard color or premium color. Standard color is not available for hardcover.
  4. Under “Trim size”, choose a size or “Custom size”. The result shows the “Trim class”: regular, or large when the book is wider than 6.12 in or higher than 9 in.
  5. Enter the “Page count”. If KDP does not print that count for your options, such as fewer than 24 pages, the tool shows an error that explains the allowed range.
  6. Optionally, enter a “List price (before tax)”. A price below the minimum or above the maximum list price triggers a warning.
  7. Optionally, open the advanced options and enter “Author copies to order”.
  8. Read “Printing cost per copy”, “Minimum list price”, “Royalty per copy (Amazon sales)”, the Expanded Distribution royalty for paperbacks, the author copy cost and the table.

Bleed and cover finish do not change the figures. The table shows only the 100, 150, 200, 300, 400 and 500 page counts that KDP prices with your options, so some rows may be missing. A negative royalty, or a trim size that is not on KDP’s list for your binding, also triggers a warning.

How does KDP calculate printing cost?

KDP’s printing cost is a fixed cost plus the page count multiplied by a per-page cost. Both values depend on the binding, Amazon store, ink and paper, trim class and page count. Bleed and cover finish do not change them.

For the default book, a 6 × 9 in black-ink paperback of 300 pages on Amazon.com, the calculation is 1.00 + 300 × 0.012 = 4.60 USD. This is the printing cost the KDP print cost calculator shows for that setup.

Rates change at the edges of each page range. For US black-ink paperback, up to 110 pages costs a flat 2.30 USD, and at exactly 110 pages the flat cost is used. Large trim uses 0.017 USD per page and a flat 2.84 USD up to 110 pages. For US hardcover, the printing cost page gives a fixed 5.65 USD plus 0.012 USD per page for 110 to 550 pages, and a flat 6.80 USD for 75 to 108 pages.

What is the minimum list price on KDP?

The minimum list price is the printing cost divided by the royalty rate. The royalty rate is 60% from a list price of 9.99 USD (or 9.99 EUR, 7.99 GBP, 13.99 CAD or AUD, 1000 JPY, 40 PLN or 110 SEK) and 50% below that.

For the default book, 4.60 ÷ 0.5 = 9.20 USD. This tool rounds the minimum up to the cent. The maximum list price shown is KDP’s limit for the store, such as 250 USD on Amazon.com. These figures are calculated from the rates on this page, not a suggested price.

How is royalty per copy calculated?

Royalty per copy is the royalty rate multiplied by the list price without tax, minus the printing cost. At a list price of 14.99 USD, the default book earns 0.6 × 14.99 − 4.60 = 4.394, shown as 4.39 USD.

For paperbacks, the Expanded Distribution royalty at 40% is also shown. At the same list price it is 0.4 × 14.99 − 4.60 = 1.396, shown as 1.40 USD. Expanded Distribution is not available for hardcover.

What do author copies cost?

Each author copy costs the printing cost. Twenty-five copies of the default book cost 25 × 4.60 = 115.00 USD before shipping and taxes, which the tool does not include.

Frequently asked questions

Is the KDP print cost calculator free to use?

Yes. It runs in your browser, is free and needs no sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Does bleed or cover finish change the printing cost?

No. KDP’s printing cost depends on binding, store, ink and paper, trim class and page count, so bleed and cover finish do not change it.

Why does my page count give an error?

KDP only prints certain page counts for each option. For example, counts under 24 are not printed, and 41 pages of premium color is not allowed. The error message explains the allowed range for your choices.

How current are the rates?

The rates were read from KDP’s help pages on 15 Oct 2026. The US paperback rows were checked word for word, and the other stores were read from the same tables. If you need to confirm a figure after that date, check KDP’s help pages directly.

Why does the hardcover result show a warning?

KDP’s pages disagree on US hardcover figures. The Hardcover Printing Cost page gives a fixed 5.65 USD, while the “Hardcover (Beta) - Pricing & Royalties” page gives 5.50 USD and a fixed 60% royalty. This tool uses the printing cost page and the 50% and 60% royalty thresholds, and shows a warning.

Is Sweden available for hardcover?

No. The Hardcover Royalty page lists different Swedish thresholds from the paperback page, so Sweden is not offered for hardcover in this tool.

Does the calculator include taxes or shipping?

No. Taxes and shipping are not included. The royalty uses the list price without tax. Results are calculated from the numbers you enter and the rates named on this page.
